Revelation 11: A Prophetic Glimpse into Jerusalem’s Future

“Rise and measure the temple of God…” – Revelation 11:1

Revelation chapter 11 offers one of the most sobering and intriguing visions in the Bible—one that centers on Jerusalem, the temple, two mysterious witnesses, and a cosmic shift toward the return of Christ. Let's walk through this passage and consider what it might mean for our world today.

The Temple and the Holy City Under Siege (Revelation 11:1–2)

John is instructed to measure the temple, the altar, and those who worship within. Yet, strikingly, the outer court is to be left out. Why? Because it will be “given to the Gentiles,” and the holy city (Jerusalem) will be trampled underfoot for 42 months—a period of three and a half years.

This suggests a time when Jerusalem, including a rebuilt temple, will come under foreign control. Interestingly, discussions and preparations are already underway by groups such as the Faithful of the Temple Mount, advocating for the rebuilding of the Third Temple.

Some Orthodox Jewish groups await the Messiah to rebuild the temple—but others, pointing to John 5:43, fear this figure may instead be the Antichrist.

The Two Witnesses: A Call to Repentance (Revelation 11:3–4)

For 1,260 days—approximately 3.5 years—God will raise two witnesses, clothed in sackcloth, to prophesy to the nations. Sackcloth signifies mourning and repentance. These two will bring a message of judgment and a call to turn back to God.

“These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.” – Revelation 11:4

This imagery echoes Zechariah 4, where olive trees symbolize Israel, and lampstands represent those anointed by the Spirit. Many believe these witnesses could be Moses and Elijah—both of whom had unique departures from earth (see 2 Kings 2 for Elijah, and Deuteronomy 34 for Moses).

Why Moses and Elijah?

  • Elijah called down fire (2 Kings 1:9–12)

  • Moses turned water to blood and called plagues (Exodus 7:14–19)

  • They both appeared with Jesus at the Transfiguration (Matthew 17, Mark 9)

Martyrdom and Global Attention (Revelation 11:7–10)

The two witnesses will eventually be killed by the "beast" and lie dead in the streets of Jerusalem, referred to as “the great city.” This will happen while the city is under multinational occupation, likely during the end-time tribulation.

For three and a half days, their bodies will remain exposed—perhaps as a warning or celebration. The world will rejoice, treating their deaths like a global holiday (“those who dwell on the earth will rejoice… and exchange gifts” – v10). These witnesses will be seen as dangerous, even terrorists, by the world.

Such vivid public exposure hints at mass media—possibly live broadcasts or internet streaming.

The Resurrection and Earthquake (Revelation 11:11–13)

Then comes a stunning moment: the breath of life from God enters them, and they stand to their feet. Fear grips the world as they ascend to heaven before the eyes of their enemies.

Soon after, a great earthquake strikes, destroying a tenth of Jerusalem and killing 7,000 people (some manuscripts suggest this could mean "names of men," implying influential individuals). In response, survivors give glory to God, hinting at a moment of widespread repentance or awe.

The Kingdom is Coming (Revelation 11:15)

The seventh trumpet sounds, and heaven proclaims:

“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever.”

This is the ultimate message of Revelation: Jesus is returning as King, and His Kingdom will be established on earth.

In Summary

  • A temple will likely be rebuilt in Jerusalem.

  • The city will be overrun by nations for 42 months.

  • Two Spirit-filled witnesses will preach repentance for 1,260 days.

  • They will be martyred, but then resurrected in a public display of God’s power.

  • The world will be shaken—literally and spiritually.

  • And through it all, the Kingdom of Christ is drawing near.

What Should We Do?

This is not just prophecy—it's a personal invitation. These events point to a world hurtling toward a final reckoning and a glorious new beginning.

Are you ready?
Jesus calls us to repent, believe the Gospel, and be baptized (Acts 2:38).
Now is the time to respond.
